Alma

Scottish tartan brickwork, campus chime towers, and quiet pine woods pinned to the frozen crook of the Pine River.

Why winter

Winter strips Alma down to its red-brick collegiate bones and quiet Scots lineage. While the bagpipes peak in May, December through February belongs to snowy loops through the Alma College arboretum, heated pint-nights downtown, and river park snowshoeing along the Pine River corridor.

Make it a weekend

Base yourself at the grand Saravilla B&B. Wake up to breakfast under carved Victorian ceilings, take a midday drive out to Gratiot County backroads for snowy barn photos, catch an evening performance at Alma College's Heritage Center, and wind down by the hearth with cider.

One good day

Fuel up on hot skillet cakes at Main Cafe, spend two hours snowshoeing the quiet loops at Pine River Park, browse winter paperbacks over a pint at Ballyhoo Books, and cap off the night with a stout and pizza at Alma Brewing Company.

A winter tall tale · as told in Alma

The Ghostly Footsteps of the Wright Opera House

Built in 1889 by lumber baron Ammi W. Wright, the red-brick block on the corner of Superior and State has long housed theatrical stages, retail, and college lofts. Following a devastating fire in 2010 and subsequent rebuilding, contractors and residents reported the unmistakable sound of soft shoe-leather footsteps pacing across upper floorboards late at night when the halls were completely locked and empty.
