The gold editionAround the holidays / Michigan, November to January

The season, in good company.

Menorahs downtown, Advent at Cranbrook, Kwanzaa at the Wright, light shows you walk through slowly and a chicken dinner in Frankenmuth. Find the one that feels like home, or go and learn somebody else’s.

Many traditions, one shared season.

Hanukkah / public light, community warmth

Menorah in the D is a Detroit Jewish community celebration. The organizer’s page still lists its 2025 event; 2026 event details are not confirmed here. Use it as a tradition to watch, not a dated booking.

Christmas / worship and music

Christ Church Cranbrook in Bloomfield Hills welcomes visitors to Advent and Christmas worship. Confirm the current year’s services directly; worship is distinct from a secular light display.

Kwanzaa / culture, family and community

The Charles H. Wright Museum in Detroit lists 2026 Kwanzaa programming beginning December 26. Explore the seven principles through community programmes and family activities. Kwanzaa is a cultural celebration, not a religion.

Interfaith / listen, learn, participate

The InterFaith Leadership Council of Metropolitan Detroit offers interfaith education and connection. Look for a public programme that explicitly welcomes visitors. Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist and other communities have distinct calendars; do not assume everyone celebrates in December.

Grand Rapids / traditions from around the world

Frederik Meijer Gardens’ Christmas & Holiday Traditions exhibition runs November 24, 2026–January 10, 2027. Cultural displays and a miniature Railway Garden make this a distinct daytime outing. Admission applies.

Frankenmuth / family at the table

A family-style chicken dinner, shop windows and a warm wander through town. Make the meal your anchor instead of racing between stops.

A new tradition / chosen family welcome

Choose one annual ritual: a winter photo, a shared pot of soup, a local performance or a no-gifts afternoon together. Make it yours; no matching sweaters required.

Visiting a faith community

Confirm public access, registration, dress expectations, photography and food needs with the host. Observe respectfully and ask before joining a ritual. An invitation to one event does not imply access to every service.
