Benzie County & Sleeping Bear South · Town edition

Frankfort

A Victorian harbor town where Betsie Bay meets Lake Michigan, complete with a roaring North Pier foghorn and year-round Main Street warmth.

Overheard in Frankfort
The Frankfort North Breakwater Lighthouse is treated like an old friend; locals check its ice-caked windows after every major gale.
Why winter

Frankfort in winter trades its summer beach sandals for Nordic skis on the Betsie Valley Trail and front-row seats to towering Lake Michigan gale waves slamming the historic North Breakwater Lighthouse. It is a tight-knit community of sailors, woodworkers, and James Beard-caliber chefs who keep the lights burning bright long after the tourists have gone south.

A winter tall tale · as told in Frankfort

The Ghost Foghorn of Elberta

During the historic whiteout storm of January 1912, the keeper at the Frankfort pier swore the steam-powered diaphone foghorn started sounding entirely on its own hours before any ship appeared on the horizon. Old-timers in Elberta still insist that when the north wind blows a gale across Betsie Bay, you can hear that phantom steam horn echoing through the old railway sheds, reminding sailors that the ice off Point Betsie takes no prisoners.

Tall tales grow in the telling. Take this one with road salt.
