Keweenaw Peninsula & Portage Lake · Town edition

Houghton / Hancock

Twin copper-mining university cities linked by a soaring vertiginous lift bridge across Portage Lake, resting in the heart of the Midwest's premier snowbelt.

Winter in Houghton / Hancock
Why winter

Houghton and Hancock are the undisputed snow capitals of the Midwest, routinely burying themselves under 250+ inches of lake-effect powder each winter. Home to Michigan Tech University, Mont Ripley ski hill right across the canal, and historic copper-mining architecture carved into steep hillsides, it is a vertical winter playground for hardcore skiers, snowmobilers, and ice engineers.

Overheard in Houghton / Hancock
Finnish-American culture permeates the Copper Country; terms like 'sisu' (perseverance), 'sauna', and 'pannukakku' are part of everyday winter life.

A winter tall tale · as told in Houghton / Hancock

The Great Copper Country Snowdrift

During the legendary winter of 1978 when Houghton received over 300 inches of snow, engineering students at Michigan Tech allegedly built a snow bridge entirely out of packed lake-effect powder that spanned the entire Portage Lake canal from Houghton to Hancock. Legend says a local mail truck crossed safely over the snow bridge before spring sunshine melted it into a minor flood.
