Northwest Lower Michigan — Kalkaska County · Town edition

Kalkaska

Trout country, deep snow, reliable diner food, and a downtown that knows exactly what winter is for.

Overheard in Kalkaska
Kalkaska calls itself Trout Town, reflecting regional fishing traditions.
Why winter

Kalkaska sits where northern Michigan's highways meet extensive forests, inland lakes, and snowmobile trails. Its compact downtown provides an uncomplicated base for breakfasts, smoked barbecue, coffee, and cold-weather excursions. November's Festival of Trees and December's Christmas celebration provide an appealing counterweight to all that wilderness.

Michigan winter
A winter tall tale · as told in Kalkaska

The Town That Put a Trout on Its Identity

Kalkaska became closely associated with trout fishing in the surrounding rivers and streams. The Trout Town identity survives in business names and community traditions. Its sporting identity now extends well beyond fishing into snowmobiling and other outdoor recreation. The fish may have started the branding, but winter has acquired a substantial share of the schedule.

Tall tales grow in the telling. Take this one with road salt.
