Straits of Mackinac · Town edition

Mackinaw City

The windy northern gateway to the Upper Peninsula, perched beneath the soaring suspension cables of the majestic Mackinac Bridge.

Overheard in Mackinaw City
The Mackinac Bridge in winter is a magnificent industrial behemoth rising through lake-effect squalls and floating ice sheets.
Why winter

Mackinaw City in winter strips away the summer fudge shops and tour buses, revealing a dramatic landscape where Lake Michigan and Lake Huron collide beneath the frozen shadow of the Mighty Mac. With views of ice-choked straits, historic colonial forts blanketed in snow, and cozy waterfront dining, it is a striking place of quiet northern beauty.

Michigan winter
A winter tall tale · as told in Mackinaw City

The ghost with opinions about salad dressing

The Dixie Saloon has been collecting ghost stories almost as long as it has been pouring. In 2023 its general manager described a night in 2021 when a stainless-steel prep table tipped over with nobody near it, sending a gallon jar of balsamic vinaigrette across the kitchen. Staff blamed a poltergeist. Nobody has proved it. Somebody, clearly, preferred ranch.
