Northeast Lower Michigan — Oscoda County, Au Sable River Valley · Town edition

Mio

Deep woods, snowy ski loops, a stubbornly beautiful river, and breakfasts big enough to count as a survival strategy.

Overheard in Mio
The Au Sable River is central to the area's history and recreational identity.
Why winter

Mio sits in the Au Sable River Valley, surrounded by the Huron National Forest. Loud Creek offers groomed cross-country skiing, while Wolf Creek follows quiet river bluffs through cedar and pine. The village supplies diners, coffee, tavern food, and unpretentious places to spend a winter night.

Field note

Loud Creek was developed through the work of a local Nordic ski club.

A winter tall tale · as told in Mio

The Ski Club That Bought Its Own Groomer

In 1984, a group of Mio-area skiers approached national forest officials about creating a cross-country trail system. They formed the Loud Creek Nordic Ski Club and raised money to purchase a used trail groomer. The club remained small, sometimes relying on barely a dozen dedicated volunteers. Their work helped turn a patch of forest into one of the area's quietly celebrated winter trails.

Good to know: No Mio-specific November 2026–March 2027 winter festival date could be independently established. Do not substitute holiday parades in Oscoda, which is a different community. Local venue details were corroborated through Wilderness Ranch's community guide and recent restaurant listings, but not every venue has its own current website. No winter sports equipment rental provider was verified. The Mio Motel's 24-hour listing does not guarantee a particular room is available. Restaurant price categories are broad editorial estimates.

Reviewed October 2026. Hours, prices and dates move; call ahead in January and February.
