Southwest Michigan — Van Buren County · Town edition

Paw Paw

Michigan wine history, a river running through town, and the kind of old buildings that deserve a second life.

Overheard in Paw Paw
Paw Paw is a historic center of Michigan winemaking.
Why winter

Paw Paw is a small but substantial winter destination for visitors interested in wine, local food, and historic downtown architecture. St. Julian keeps its tasting room open through the colder months, while the area's breweries and restaurants supply indoor warmth. The river and Maple Lake offer quiet winter scenery, although lake ice should never be treated as a shortcut.

A random Saturday

Nothing planned. Here’s the plan.

A winter tall tale · as told in Paw Paw

The Town That Kept Making Wine

Paw Paw's connection to winemaking reaches back through the Prohibition era. The village became home to major Michigan wine producers, including St. Julian and Warner Vineyards. Over time, winery production, tasting rooms, and regional harvest traditions became part of the local identity. Not every Michigan town has this much history stored in bottles.

Tall tales grow in the telling. Take this one with road salt.
