Port Huron

A working-waterfront town with river views, literary coffee and winter hockey at full volume.

Winter in Port Huron
Why winter

The river and Blue Water Bridge give even a short winter walk a large horizon. Warm up in the Carnegie Museum or a downtown café, then choose hockey, dinner or outdoor skating when the weather cooperates.

Overheard in Port Huron
The Blue Water Bridge and working shipping channel are everyday landmarks, not theme-park scenery.
A random Saturday · 01

Captain for a simulated afternoon

Attempt the Carnegie Museum's freighter-steering game in its Storm of 1913 setting, then have dinner at Freighters with considerably less responsibility for the river traffic.

Or try · 02

A Surrealist café exercise

At Exquisite Corpse, play the folded-paper drawing game that gave the café its name, then take the completed creature to a Casey's lunch for judgement. Bring paper; the monster is your contribution.

Field note

Palm's has served its signature Chicken in the Rough through generations of family meals.

One good day

Raven coffee → Carnegie Museum and freighter simulator → Casey's lunch → outdoor skating if open → Vintage dinner or a Prowlers home game.

Make it a weekend

Saturday: Carnegie Museum, downtown cafés and a hockey game; stay at the DoubleTree. Sunday: Exquisite Corpse is closed, so choose Raven, take a short waterfront look and eat at Freighters or Palm's.

A winter tall tale · as told in Port Huron

The library that nearly vanished

Port Huron's Carnegie building began as a public library in 1902, funded at a cost of $45,000. After the city and county libraries merged, the building was slated for demolition. Local volunteers helped save it, and the museum opened in 1968. It now lets visitors steer an imaginary freighter, an unusually good second career for a library.
