Historic Michigan border city anchored by the monumental Soo Locks, where towering Great Lakes freighters lock through icy international waters.

Overheard in Sault Ste. Marie
The International 500 is a monumental U.P. sporting holiday; the entire city transforms into a vibrant festival of snowmobile racing culture.
Why winter

Sault Ste. Marie ('Soo') in winter is an industrial marvel and snowy wonderland. As the oldest city in Michigan, it guards the St. Marys River between Lake Superior and Lake Huron. While the massive Soo Locks continue operating through winter freeze cycles, the town offers world-class snowmobiling on the International 500 track, cozy pubs, and striking views across to Ontario.

Michigan winter
A winter tall tale · as told in Sault Ste. Marie

The year the sky filled with balloons

During the Second World War the Soo Locks mattered so much that the Army stationed thousands of troops around Sault Ste. Marie. In 1942 huge barrage balloons rose over the locks, their steel cables meant to discourage low-flying aircraft. No attack ever came. The Upper Peninsula weather, by most accounts, gave the balloons enough trouble on its own.
