Winter in Battle Creek
Southwest Michigan & Kalamazoo River Valley · Town edition

Battle Creek

The historic Cereal City on the Kalamazoo River, famous for its grand Victorian architecture, industrial cereal legacy, and the sprawling winter wildlife loops of Binder Park Zoo.

Overheard in Battle Creek
Battle Creek forever changed global morning routines as the birthplace of Kellogg's and Post cereal empires.
Why winter

Battle Creek in winter balances its rich cereal-heritage past with crisp outdoor exploration. From cross-country skiing through the snow-draped woods of the Leila Arboretum to cozying up in historic downtown brick taverns along the river, it offers a fascinating look at southwest Michigan winter life without the tourist crowds.

A winter tall tale · as told in Battle Creek

The wind splinters

Battle Creek's first settlers in the 1830s had a hard time of it: cholera, malaria, and never quite enough to eat. The livestock went hungry with them. The town's hogs got so thin that people took to calling them wind splinters, which is a long way from the cereal capital of the world.
