A winter tall tale · as told in Lansing

The capital nobody expected

In the cold winter of 1847, Michigan's legislators argued about moving the capital out of Detroit. Established towns competed for it; lawmakers picked the nearly empty Lansing Township, to laughter and disbelief. Observers called it a howling wilderness, and a temporary wooden Capitol went up in a hurry. Michigan chose a patch of woods and told it to start acting important. It did.
