Winter in East Lansing
Mid-Michigan & Red Cedar River Valley · Town edition

East Lansing

A vibrant, collegiate Big Ten university city anchored by the sprawling, wooded campus of Michigan State University and bustling college-town culture.

Overheard in East Lansing
Michigan State University's sprawling 5,200-acre campus turns into a gothic winter wonderland of collegiate brick, snow-covered oaks, and frozen riverbanks.
Why winter

East Lansing in winter is defined by the magnificent, snow-draped gothic and collegiate-brick campus of MSU. When students transition between academic terms or gather in cozy university-district coffee shops and pubs, the town offers beautiful winter walks along the Red Cedar River, world-class Wharton Center performances, and vibrant local dining.

A winter tall tale · as told in East Lansing

The Sparty Snow Guardian

During the record-breaking blizzard of 1978, MSU students woke up to find that the massive bronze Sparty statue on campus had mysteriously grown an eight-foot-tall suit of armor completely carved out of solid lake-effect snow. Old-timers in East Lansing still joke that Sparty stays on active winter patrol to make sure no University of Michigan snowballs cross the Red Cedar River.

Tall tales grow in the telling. Take this one with road salt.
