Northern Lake Michigan Archipelago · Town edition

Beaver Island

A remote, wind-swept island sanctuary in northern Lake Michigan, offering profound winter solitude, rugged trails, and tight-knit island hospitality.

Overheard in Beaver Island
Beaver Island is famously known as 'America's Emerald Isle,' with a distinct Irish heritage and a fiercely independent island community.
Why winter

Beaver Island in winter is an adventure for the truly dedicated. Cut off from the mainland by unpredictable Lake Michigan ice and winter storms (accessible primarily via regular winter island prop-plane flights), the island drops its summer resort veneer. Visitors experience absolute silence, snow-draped inland lakes, historic lighthouses, and island pubs where residents gather by the wood stove.

A winter tall tale · as told in Beaver Island

The king of Beaver Island

In the 1840s James Jesse Strang brought his followers to Beaver Island and, in 1850, had himself crowned king. It went about as well as you would expect. His own people turned on him in 1856, and the mainland cheered his attackers. It remains the only time an American island has had a king, and Beaver Island is entirely relaxed about it now.
