Northern Lower Peninsula & Lake Michigan · Town edition

Charlevoix

A historic castle-flanked harbor town famous for whimsical Earl Young mushroom stone houses and frozen Lake Charlevoix views.

Overheard in Charlevoix
Earl Young's mushroom houses look like hobbit cottages dropped into a Northern Michigan snowglobe.
Why winter

Charlevoix in winter sheds its summer yacht-club vanity and reveals a storybook landscape of stone masonry architecture carved into snowbanks. Without the summer bridge traffic bottlenecking Round Lake, you can walk the frozen channel piers, tour magical limestone fairytale homes buried under snow, and warm up in historic downtown bistros.

  2. Massive erratic boulders stacked into magical stone chimney fireplaces.
  3. Frosted round leaded-glass windows glowing warmly against the winter dusk.
A winter tall tale · as told in Charlevoix

The man who built houses for hobbits

From the early twentieth century, the builder Earl Young filled Charlevoix with stone houses that look grown rather than built: rounded walls, enormous boulders, rooflines like caps. He let the shape of each stone decide the plan. Locals call them the Mushroom Houses, and in snow they look even more like it.
