Chelsea

A small theatre town with serious dinner plans, Jiffy in the air and Waterloo woods just outside the frame.

Overheard in Chelsea
Chelsea is the home of Jiffy baking mixes; the little blue box has unusually strong local credentials.
Why winter

Chelsea makes a compact winter weekend: professional theatre, Main Street supper and snowy trails without a long urban expedition. Waterloo supplies the quiet; the Purple Rose supplies people having rather more complicated evenings.

A random Saturday

An empty Saturday, filled.

A random Saturday · 01

An advertisement with staying power

Find the nineteenth-century Jaxon Soap advertisement on the Common Grill's south wall, then inspect the former bank's stone wreath before coffee at Zou Zou's. An advertising campaign with an unusually long tail.

Or try · 02

Ice Age, then actual ice

On a January Saturday, pair Eddy Discovery Center's geology exhibits with a booked public skate at Ice Cube Chelsea, then retire to Smokehouse 52 for pulled pork. Several kinds of sedimentary layering.

Field note

The Purple Rose makes a small downtown behave like a theatre district.

Make it a weekend

Saturday: Waterloo trails and, when open, Eddy Discovery Center; Agricole shopping; Smokehouse 52 and Cleary's. Sunday: Zou Zou's, downtown history and a Purple Rose matinee if scheduled.

One good day

Zou Zou's breakfast → downtown detail walk → a public skate at Ice Cube Chelsea → Common Grill dinner and a reserved Purple Rose performance.

Pulled pork

For a home riff, slowly braise pork shoulder with cider, onion and a smoky spice rub until it pulls apart. Pile into buns with sharp slaw and a vinegar-led sauce; the restaurant's smoker remains its own business.

A winter tall tale · as told in Chelsea

The clocktower's large drink

Chelsea's clocktower once concealed a 30,000-gallon wooden water tank. The tank supplied fire sprinklers across the Glazier Stove Works complex. By 1907, the tower watched over an industrial operation occupying ten acres and eighteen buildings. The handsome landmark had a thoroughly practical inner life.

Field note

Historic shop walls still carry advertisements that have outlasted several advertising strategies.

  • Bring a market bag to Agricole; local winter shopping need not consist entirely of mittens.
  • At the holiday parade, follow the published Main Street route; the procession does not cross the railroad tracks.
