Grand Rapids

Beer halls, art museums and a downtown that treats winter darkness as exhibition space.

Winter in Grand Rapids
Why winter

World of Winter turns downtown into a free outdoor art walk, while Meijer Gardens supplies a tropical escape and serious holiday spectacle. Add skating, a neighborhood meal and one well-chosen brewery; the city has enough indoors to make the outdoors feel optional rather than compulsory.

Overheard in Grand Rapids
Beer City is an established local identity; choose a few breweries and give them time.
A random Saturday

Nothing planned. Here’s the plan.

A random Saturday · 01

The arcade critic

Choose one World of Winter installation after dark, then challenge a companion to a retro game at Stella's. Compare the public art with the cabinet graphics, preferably without writing a manifesto.

Or try · 02

Practice a very small tip shot

Eat at Yesterdog and inspect its gramophone-horn tip target, then take a daylight look at Calder's enormous La Grande Vitesse. Grand Rapids offers sculpture in several useful sizes.

Field note

Eastown's Yesterdog has its own ordering customs and still takes cash.

Make it a weekend

Saturday: Meijer Gardens, Butcher's Union and a brewery or holiday light program. Sunday: Blandford snowshoeing when rentals operate, Yesterdog lunch and a short downtown art walk; use the Amway Grand, Canopy or Holiday Inn as a base.

One good day

Madcap coffee → GRAM or the Public Museum → skating at Rosa Parks Circle if open → San Chez dinner → World of Winter after dark during its dates.

The winter table

Eat it here. Make it at home.

Eat it at Yesterdog

Krautdog

For a home version, warm a hot dog and bun, then add well-drained sauerkraut and mustard to taste. Keep the toppings tidy enough to eat standing up; the vintage register is harder to reproduce.

Field note

La Grande Vitesse became a civic symbol well beyond its Calder Plaza home.

Three things most people walk past.

La Grande Vitesse, Calder Plaza, downtown Grand Rapids

  1. The CA 69 signature on the sculpture's east side.
  2. The visible bolts joining the great steel shapes.
  3. The gaps between the red plates, which change the outline as you walk around.
A winter tall tale · as told in Grand Rapids

Forty-two tons of civic personality

Alexander Calder's La Grande Vitesse was dedicated in Grand Rapids in June 1969. The painted-steel sculpture weighs about forty-two tons. It was the first public artwork funded through the National Endowment for the Arts' public-art program. Its image went on to appear on civic stationery, street signs and garbage trucks: few sculptures have achieved such comprehensive municipal employment.
