West Michigan · Town edition

Ionia

A historic brick-paved river town where Victorian architecture meets deep winter quiet.

Why winter

Ionia's downtown aesthetic is anchored by 19th-century brick facades that feel almost theatrical under a layer of January snow. It’s a place for slow mornings in local diners and quiet afternoons snowshoeing the vast expanses of the Ionia State Recreation Area. Winter here is unpretentious and deeply rooted in community resilience.

One good day

Ski the loops at Ionia State Recreation Area in the morning, warm up with a massive omelet at Main Street Cafe, and spend the afternoon photographing the historic brick facades.

Make it a weekend

Check into the American Inn, spend Saturday ice fishing at Sessions Lake or snowmobiling the Fred Meijer Trail, and recover with dark beers at Steele Street Brewing.

The Dexter Colony Trunk Burial

In 1833, the Dexter colony traveled through the unbroken wilderness to settle Ionia. Along the journey, Samuel Dexter's young son Riley died of scarlet fever and, lacking supplies, was buried in a trunk at the foot of a tree in what is now Clinton County.
