Western Upper Peninsula & Gogebic Range · Town edition

Ironwood

A historic iron-mining city nestled in the rugged Gogebic Range, boasting massive Great Lakes snowfalls and towering alpine ski resorts.

Winter in Ironwood
Overheard in Ironwood
Ironwood sits in a massive Gogebic Range snowbelt, routinely measuring winter snowfalls in hundreds of inches.
Why winter

Ironwood is a heavyweight winter destination. Positioned at the far western edge of the U.P., it anchors the Big Powderhorn mountain region, receiving over 200 inches of lake-effect snow annually. With three major downhill ski resorts (Big Powderhorn, Blackjack, and Indianhead/Snowriver), miles of groomed snowmobile trails, and the iconic Mount Zion ski jump, it is a premier midwest alpine and Nordic capital.

A winter tall tale · as told in Ironwood

The ski jump that reached for the clouds

Copper Peak, finished near Ironwood in 1969, was built for ski flying, the most extreme kind of jumping there is. It hosted international competitions until 1994. Renovations began in 2025 in the hope of flying again. There was never a shortage of hills up here; this one just wanted an extension.
