A winter tall tale · as told in Ishpeming / Negaunee

Thirty-five feet, and the start of something

In 1887 Scandinavian immigrants founded the Norden Ski Club in Ishpeming, one of the first organized ski clubs in America. Its first public tournament, on February 25, 1888, was won with a jump of 35 feet. The town went on to become a capital of American ski jumping, and it now houses the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame. Thirty-five feet does not sound like much until you remember who went first.
