Manistee

A historic lumber-baron port city featuring grand Victorian brick architecture, deep river gorges, and roaring winter steelhead runs.

Why winter

Manistee is where Michigan's 19th-century timber wealth meets rugged natural wilderness. While summer visitors crowd the beaches, winter brings out the steelheaders standing waist-deep in the frozen Manistee River, snowmobilers carving through the Huron-Manistee National Forest, and locals enjoying the river walk beneath grand iron swing bridges.

A winter tall tale · as told in Manistee

The Ramsdell's standing reservation

The Ramsdell Theatre opened in 1903, and plenty of people believe its builder, T.J. Ramsdell, never left. Crews talk about doors that close themselves, lights that come down without help and windows that open on cold nights. Ramsdell and an unnamed woman are said to watch from near the balcony, so the house is never quite empty.
