Munising

A dramatic Lake Superior port town cradled beneath towering multicolored sandstone cliffs and frozen ice-curtained waterfalls.

Overheard in Munising
Munising during the Michigan Ice Fest transforms into the global capital of ice climbing, buzzing with adventurous energy and camaraderie.
Why winter

Munising in winter is an absolute natural masterpiece. While its famous Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore cliffs are visited by millions in summer, winter transforms them into towering, cathedral-like curtains of blue and green ice. With the Michigan Ice Fest drawing climbers from around the globe, snowshoeing through silent pine forests, and cozy downtown brewpubs, it is a premier U.P. winter destination.

A winter tall tale · as told in Munising

The ice caves that aren't caves

Every winter, water seeps through the sandstone of the Rock River gorge near Munising and freezes into curtains and columns tall enough to walk behind. They are called the Eben Ice Caves, though technically they are not caves at all, and they are never the same two winters running. It is an attraction that builds itself every January and takes itself down every spring.
