Muskegon
A lumber town with grand old houses, a larger art museum and the excellent bad idea of trying luge.
Lumber wealth left the city its ornate Hackley and Hume houses and a lasting museum culture.
A three-generation afternoon indoors
Browse The Coffee Factory, The Book Nook Too and Fuddy Duds Vintage Junque in the same Watermark space, then move downtown for US31 sandwiches before its early close. Coffee, paper, old clothes and relish: a sturdy set of hobbies.
From one small sport to another
Book a morning luge lesson at the sports park, then play MiniARTure Golf at the Muskegon Museum of Art during its exhibition dates. Your afternoon ball should travel rather more slowly.

Aldea coffee → a reserved luge session or forest skate → Museum of Art → Hearthstone dinner on a day it opens.
Saturday: winter sports, the Museum of Art and Lake House dinner; stay downtown or on the lake. Sunday: Coffee Factory, museum time or a scheduled holiday-house tour, then Dr. Rolf's before its 7 p.m. close.

Pork barbecue sandwich with cabbage relish
For a home riff, pile thinly sliced roast pork into a soft bun with finely chopped cabbage relish, sharpened with vinegar and sweetened to taste. Spoon over a little meat juice if you like a wet bun; the family relish formula remains theirs.

Three things most people walk past.

- Book luge ahead and check the natural-ice conditions before driving to Scenic Drive.
- Plan Sunday dinner carefully: Hearthstone and Lake House close, and Unruly's Sunday kitchen is closed even when the bar opens.
- US31 Bar-B-Q's sweet, tangy cabbage relish is a local signature rather than a generic barbecue sauce.
- Pigeon Hill's playful beer names make dessert a brewing category.
- Northtown, downtown and Lakeside offer distinct stops; allow driving time between neighborhoods and the sports park.
Local customAt US31, 'plain' means no relish, 'dry' means drained meat juices, and 'dipped' means the top bun goes into the juice.
