Eastern Upper Peninsula & Straits of Mackinac · Town edition

St. Ignace

A historic Straits port town serving as the scenic Upper Peninsula foot of the Mighty Mac bridge and a gateway to frozen Great Lakes wilderness.

Overheard in St. Ignace
St. Ignace is where Lower Peninsula travelers officially cross the threshold into the wild, proud culture of the Upper Peninsula ('Yoopers').
Why winter

St. Ignace in winter is rugged, authentic, and profoundly peaceful. Situated directly across the Straits of Mackinac from the Lower Peninsula, it offers stunning winter views of the illuminated Mackinac Bridge, access to the unpaved forest trails of the Mackinac Straits region, and great local taverns serving up-north hospitality.

A winter tall tale · as told in St. Ignace

The Straits Ice Bridge Hockey Legend

During the bitter winter freeze of 1979 when the Straits of Mackinac froze completely solid from St. Ignace to Mackinaw City for six weeks, local Yoopers allegedly organized an impromptu midnight hockey game right across the international shipping lane beneath the bridge. Legend says a passing Coast Guard icebreaker had to gently nudge the floating goals out of the way so it could get through.

Tall tales grow in the telling. Take this one with road salt.
