Saginaw Bay & Great Lakes Bay Region · Town edition

Bay City

A salty Saginaw Bay maritime port boasting grand lumber-baron mansions and the proud title of Ice Fishing Walleye Capital of the World.

Overheard in Bay City
Saginaw Bay ice fishing isn't just a hobby; it's a massive regional industry and cultural phenomenon that defines winter in Bay City.
Why winter

Bay City commands the mouth of the Saginaw River where it meets Saginaw Bay. In winter, this maritime hub transforms into an ice-fishing mecca, drawing anglers from across the country. With beautifully preserved 19th-century architecture along Center Avenue, a walkable downtown full of antique shops, and excellent waterfront dining, it offers a striking blend of blue-collar fishing grit and historic elegance.

A winter tall tale · as told in Bay City

The caretaker of the USS Edson

The retired destroyer USS Edson is moored for good on the Saginaw River in Bay City, where it serves as a museum ship. The story aboard is that a former caretaker loved the ship so much that he never quite signed off. Volunteers and visitors talk about a protective presence in the cold steel passageways, which on a February night you will be glad of.
