Harbor Country & Southwest Michigan Shoreline · Town edition

New Buffalo

A breezy Southwest Michigan gateway town where Chicagoans escape to lake-effect dunes, craft breweries, and wide winter beaches.

Winter in New Buffalo
Overheard in New Buffalo
New Buffalo serves as the primary coastal gateway connecting Chicago weekenders to the peaceful dunes of Harbor Country.
Why winter

New Buffalo in winter trades its summer beach towels for quiet shoreline walks, windswept dunes, and cozy downtown tasting rooms. Without the summer Chicago weekend gridlock, the town offers exceptional farm-to-table dining, local craft cider, and peaceful solitude along the frozen Lake Michigan coast.

A winter tall tale · as told in New Buffalo

The shipwreck that started a town

In October 1834 a storm drove Captain Wessel Whittaker's schooner Post Boy ashore on Lake Michigan. Walking north along the coast to safety, he found a promising natural harbour near the Galien River, came back to buy the land, and founded New Buffalo. A terrible voyage, and an unexpectedly good real-estate idea.
