Southwest · Town edition

St. Joseph

A bluff-top lake town where winter means a million lights, carved carousel animals and respectable amounts of pizza.

Winter in St. Joseph
Why winter

The summer beach traffic clears, but downtown keeps its restaurants, galleries and indoor carousel running. Add the covered outdoor ice arena and a remarkably busy winter festival calendar, and the lake becomes a backdrop rather than an instruction to swim.

Overheard in St. Joseph
St. Joe is the everyday name; St. Joseph is the version for the envelope.
A random Saturday · 01

A very short dinosaur expedition

At Silver Beach Carousel, find Rotary Raptor's leaf-shaped seat, then conduct a serious coffee debrief at Forté. No excavation permit required.

A random Saturday

No plans? Good. Try these.

Or try · 02

Bluff, brew, repeat

Compare Richard Hunt's Rising Crossing Tides at Krasl with the actual lake from the bluff, then move the discussion indoors at Silver Harbor.

Field note

The bluff above Silver Beach gives downtown its lake view and its own supply of wind.

Make it a weekend

Saturday: carousel, downtown lunch and skating once the winter schedule opens; stay at the Boulevard Inn and book Bistro dinner. Sunday: drive to Sarett for a snow-dependent ski or snowshoe outing, then return for coffee and pizza.

One good day

Forté coffee → Krasl's galleries and sculpture → Caffè Tosi lunch → carousel ride → Silver Beach Pizza and, after dark, the bluff's holiday lights when operating.

  3. Bear's maize-and-blue saddle, a nod to St. Joseph High School.
A winter tall tale · as told in St. Joseph

The history lesson that refuses to stand still

The present Silver Beach Carousel began carrying riders on January 2, 2010. Its 48 carved figures share the deck with two chariots, including a wheelchair-accessible sea serpent. Above them, 18 rounding boards tell local history through colorized historic photographs. It is a civic archive with a much better soundtrack and a mild tendency to go in circles.
