Kalamazoo
A college-and-brewery city with free museum time, serious cocktails and a pioneering mall that forgot the roof.
Mall City comes from the nation's pioneering outdoor pedestrian shopping mall, opened in 1959.
Refuel in the former filling station
Start at Water Street's original café and ask where the old oil-change pit sat, then walk the Kalamazoo Mall to consider a city center designed around people instead of pumps.
Two museums, two kinds of horsepower
Drive to the Air Zoo in Portage or the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners, choose your preferred machine, then return to Studio Grill before its lunch service ends. Pick one regional museum if you want time to look rather than commute.

Water Street coffee → Valley Museum → Studio Grill lunch → KIA → Rustica dinner and a ticketed Bell's show if scheduled.
Saturday: choose Bittersweet skiing, the Air Zoo or Gilmore Car Museum, then Principle and Bell's downtown. Sunday: Crow's Nest, the Valley Museum after noon and an unhurried Mall walk; stay downtown at Radisson, Hilton Garden Inn or Kalamazoo House.
