Halfway, more or less.
Michigan's 45th parallel comes ashore on a Lake Michigan beach and leaves through a Lake Huron marsh, past a lighthouse, a cairn, a weather office and a great deal of snow. The signs say halfway to the North Pole. They're close.

The line comes ashore.
Lake Michigan shore at the south edge of Leland, Leelanau County
The 45th parallel reaches Michigan by clipping the south end of South Manitou Island, then comes ashore on the Leelanau Peninsula at the southern edge of Leland, the old fishing village. en.wikipedia.org ↗
From here it crosses Leelanau, the open water of both arms of Grand Traverse Bay, and Antrim County before heading inland. en.wikipedia.org ↗

The sign is a little optimistic.
Mission Point Lighthouse, Old Mission Peninsula
Mission Point Lighthouse was first lit on September 10, 1870, and was retired in 1933 when an automatic light offshore took over. Residents raised the money so the township could keep it. missionpointlighthouse.com ↗
A sign by the parking lot says you are standing on the 45th parallel. Not quite: the lighthouse sits at about 44.99°N, and the line itself passes over open water roughly a kilometer north of the point. mnmuseumofthems.org ↗

A monument made of every county.
East shore of Grand Traverse Bay, Antrim County, with the Hugh J. Gray Cairn near Kewadin
The cairn was dedicated on June 28, 1938, to Hugh J. Gray, who founded the West Michigan Tourist Association. It is built from 83 stones, one sent by each Michigan county. Wexford County sent a piece of rubber. michigan.org ↗
Its plaque has long been described as marking the halfway point to the Pole. The cairn actually stands about three and a half miles south of the line; a separate sign on US-31 marks the real crossing. mnmuseumofthems.org ↗

Where the snow gets counted.
Gaylord, Otsego County
The line crosses the southern edge of Gaylord. Nine miles southwest of town, the National Weather Service office on Passenheim Road forecasts for 25 counties of northern Lower Michigan and two in the eastern U.P. weather.gov ↗
The 2024–25 season broke that office's snowfall record, passing the old mark of 185.6 inches on February 28, 2025. cbsnews.com ↗
The town's chalet look dates to the 1930s and the Otsego Ski Club, when local leaders decided the snowbelt was a selling point. Its sister city is Pontresina, Switzerland. mydigitalpublication.com ↗

Right through town.
Atlanta, Montmorency County
Atlanta straddles the line. Signs on M-32, six miles west of town and six miles east near the M-33 junction, read: 45th Parallel, Halfway Between the Equator and N. Pole. wurlington-bros.com ↗

The line goes back to the water.
US-23 at the Thunder Bay marsh, south of Alpena
A sign on the east side of US-23, between Alpena and Ossineke, tells drivers they are now crossing the 45th parallel. A mile or so later the line leaves Michigan through Thunder Bay into Lake Huron. mnmuseumofthems.org ↗
Offshore is the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary: designated in 2000, expanded in 2014, 4,300 square miles, and about 100 shipwrecks found so far. sanctuaries.noaa.gov ↗
The year, in hours of daylight.
At 45°N the sun is up about 8 hours 46 minutes on the winter solstice and 15 hours 37 minutes on the summer one. In Gaylord in 2026, the earliest sunset is 4:56 p.m., on December 9. sunrise-sunset.org ↗
On December 21, the line gets about fifteen hours of dark.
The towns near the parallel spend it the sensible way: with lights on, and something going on downtown.
